Evaluating Course Effectiveness

I’ve gone through Faculty Development's eLearning Institute both as a participant and course reviewer, so I highly recommend it. The institute guides you through a process to assess your course using the Quality Learning & Teaching standards. I learned a lot and have really transformed my courses.

 4.11 EVALUATING COURSE EFFECTIVENESS

The Quality Learning and Teaching (QLT) Rubric

If you were teaching during the pandemic, perhaps you got a taste of what it means to suddenly teach remotely without knowing any of the evidence-based standards for effective teaching and learning. In order to truly take on teaching an online course using quality standards, we recommend you learn about the Quality Learning and Teaching (QLT) Rubric. This is a framework about design and delivery, and provides best practices and guidance for course redesign.  The full instrument can help you evaluate the effectiveness of your course and help guide design and inform decisions regarding online, hybrid, and face-to-face courses.  You can use it as a checklist as you design a course or to review a completed course.

QLT is part of a California State University System Project Links to an external site. to consolidate and improve existing resources and tools.  It aims to:

  • Create an evaluation tool for course development
  • Identify exemplary practices
  • Inform design decisions
  • Recognize quality courses

Here are some specific times that you might want to use QLT:

  • Before: Review course design principles before starting a redesign project
  • During: Use to guide design process decisions while developing the course
  • Completed: Assess completed course to make final revisions
  • Implementation: Evaluate course effectiveness during and after delivery

The Office of Faculty Development supports faculty in redesigning courses using QLT, including through the eLearning Institute.
