5.6 CENTERS AND INSTITUTES
CSUN is home to many Centers and Institutes, where you can find faculty involved in scholarship related to your own, collaborate on projects, or find support for your own research. You can find a list of 47 Centers and Institutes in this list. Often faculty find ways to collaborate with these centers to achieve their scholarship, service and teaching goals and passions.
A few examples include:
BUILD PODER
Funded by the National Institutes of Health, BUILD PODER (Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity, Promoting Opportunities for Diversity in Education and Research) supports and trains nearly 280 students and over 100 faculty mentors who work together on mutual biomedical research projects and present their work at professional conferences.
Faculty mentors attend a 16-hour orientation to mentoring with humility and annual training and have opportunities for research training in pilot projects, grant-writing and other methods training, conferences that inform the community about Critical Race Theory, our theoretical and transformative foundation.
The Research Enrichment Core of BUILD PODER supports faculty research mentors by (1) mentor training that integrates cultural humility, and (2) infrastructure and research skills-building to support research development. In keeping with Critical Race Theory (Bell, 1980) and Wise Mentoring (Cohen, Steele, & Ross, 1999), BUILD PODER holds high standards and expectations while supporting faculty in a customized fashion to ensure their research and mentoring provide meaningful, positive, and productive experiences for all members of our biomedical research teams.
Faculty research enrichment opportunities include:
- Research Hubs (year-round)
- Faculty Scholar Academy (FSA) grant-writing support (year-round)
- Research skills workshops (fall and spring semesters)
- Mentor Training in cultural humility employing Critical Race Theory (CRT) (fall and spring semesters)
- External, off-campus, mentors and training (year-round)
