We want to learn how to properly pronounce each other's names and build a strong sense of community amongst ourselves that we will carry on to our classrooms. 

 

Why Should We Learn To Pronounce People's Names?

Our names carry our history and identity.  Making an effort to pronounce a person’s name correctly signals to them that they matter and it can help you connect with your students.  This is an important value in Faculty Development because we know this fosters a sense of belonging in any context, including the classroom.  As educators, we play a powerful role in helping learners feel like they belong.

Record your name with NameCoach

CSUN has a tool called NameCoach that helps faculty learn names effectively. This lets both instructors and students make personalized audio recordings, using their own voice, of their preferred and correct name pronunciation.  The best part is that this software is integrated both in Canvas and MyCSUNPortal, where you find your class rosters.

In the video below, a CSUN faculty talks about the benefits of using NameCoach with her students.

Here is what you have to do:

1. Record your name with NameCoach. The instructions below will guide you through the recording process.

2. After you record your name, go to Roster Recording (in the course navigation menu) and listen to everyone else's name pronunciation. Can you commit to learn at least three names?

 

Using the NameCoach recorder

1. Select NameCoach to record your name in the course navigation menu. See image below:

2. Follow the prompts to either record your name via phone call or using your computer's built-in microphone.

3. To check the course roster, scroll down on the NameCoach page. Course participants who have recorded their names will appear in the “Recorded Names” tab, and those who haven't will appear in the “Unrecorded Names” tab. The roster is automatically populated with all course participants after the recordings are created.
