Emergency Preparedness
1.7 EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS
In the event of an emergency, dial 911 from a campus phone if possible. This ensures that you will get in contact with someone familiar with the campus. Dial 911 on your cell phone if a campus phone is not available.
Campuswide Situations
Campus advisories are posted at the top of the CSUN homepage. This page is updated regularly when there are campus advisories with information and resources.
Personal Situations
Always dial 911 if you are having a medical or other life-threatening emergency.
Canceling Class
You may not cancel class without informing your department. If you need to cancel class or if you will be more than a few minutes late, call your department’s main phone number to notify the office staff as soon as possible. They can put a note on your door and then they will be ready to field any student questions. They should ask you to also contact your students (such as via email and/or Canvas announcement), if possible. Many students commute to campus from great distances and may pay for childcare or have other expenses connected to attending class, so it is important to inform them as soon as you can.
Student Situations
Always dial 911 if you suspect a student is having a medical or other life-threatening emergency. Read about specific emergency situations on the Emergency Management & Preparedness website.
Physical Health
- Always dial 911 if you suspect a student is having a medical or other life-threatening emergency.
- Injured or sick students may receive medical care from the Klotz Student Health center. Services are often free or very low-cost.
- While most services require an appointment, if a student is injured on campus, they can immediately go to the health center to request a triage appointment right away. You may walk them to the health center if appropriate. They will ask the student to fill out an incident report for on-campus injuries.
- FONEMED (877) 678-3999 is available for medial advice and triage services when Klotz is closed.
Mental Health
- Always dial 911 if you suspect a student is having a medical or other life-threatening emergency.
- If you believe your student is having a mental health crisis on campus during business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.), you can walk them to University Counseling Services located in BH520 and request a “triage appointment” at the front desk. UCS will do their best to see the student that same day.
- You can call (818) 677-2366 and press option 1 to speak with a UCS counselor during business hours for a consultation if you have urgent concerns about a student’s mental health.
- Call (818) 677-2366 and press option 3 after business hours to speak with a crisis counselor if you have urgent concerns about a student’s mental health.
Academic Support
- There are many free department-specific tutoring resources on campus. Your department may recommend a specific tutoring center or service.
- The Learning Resource Center is a large, central tutoring resource that offers a variety of services, including writing support and content tutoring for science, math, and related courses. Services are offered online and in-person.
- Encourage students to speak with an academic advisor at least once per semester, before registering for next semester’s classes.
Financial Situations
- Financial aid counseling is available by referral. Call 1-818-677-4085 or walk in to BH100. Hours vary widely by day and service; see full hours on their website.
- There are a limited number of MataCare Emergency Grants available to students each semester. Students can apply for $50-$500 to cover documented unexpected emergency expenses, such as those related to a car accident, hospitalization, or becoming unemployed.
- Free food is available from the food pantry, although days/times are limited. Students (and staff) do not need to show proof of need; just show up and get some free food and personal hygiene items!
