Welcome Lecturers
Welcome Lecturers!
As you may already know, the CSU uses the term “lecturer” to describe faculty hired only to teach. This position is similar to the term “adjunct” used at some other institutions, but at CSUN, “adjunct” is a different, unpaid teaching position. Lecturers may also be called “part-time” faculty (although they may teach a full-time load) or “temporary” faculty (although they may teach at CSUN for their entire career). More than half of all faculty at CSUN are lecturers, so you’re in good company!
Some of the information in this handbook will be more or less relevant to you as compared to your tenure-track colleagues. Specifically, you may wish to skip Module 5: Find Support for Your Scholarship and Module 6: Navigate Service & Committee Work for now while you get used to teaching on campus. This is because, as a lecturer, most departments will not require you to participate in scholarship or service. However, there are still many opportunities available for lecturers wishing to engage in these activities. Please feel welcome to revisit these modules at your convenience!
Special Tip
Keep an eye out for notes like this one that indicate whether information applies more to lecturers or tenure-track faculty.
The first few modules are for all faculty at CSUN. Select the button below to start from the beginning, or select “Modules” in the left navigation pane to browse categories of information.
