Matilda: The Musical
Book By: Dennis Kelly
Music & Lyrics: Tim Minchin
Directed by: Garry Lennon
Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher Miss Honey. During her first term at school, the two forge a bond as Miss Honey begins to recognize and appreciate Matilda's extraordinary personality. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves to punish those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!

Audition Requirements
Singing Audition:
Please come prepared with at least 16 bars of a song (No more than 1 minute), from a Broadway musical. Do not sing a song from Matilda. Bring your sheet music with start and stop clearly marked. We will provide an accompanist. No acapella auditions. It would be best if your song was memorized.
Acting Audition:
Please chose a monologue from a play, preferably comic, and memorize it and be ready to perform it after your singing audition. Again, pick a monologue from a play not a movie, not a tv show and not the ones you find when you google. The monologue should be about a minute or so, but we may cut you off at any point. You are permitted to bring a copy of your sides in the room, but we would really like you to be memorized.
Audition Process:
- After you enter the room you will give your music to the accompanist.
- Then take your place on the area marked on the stage.
- We will ask you to state your full name and the name of your song.
- After you sing, we will ask you to perform your memorized monologue.
- We may ask you to change something or make a different choice. This is just our way of getting to know you, don’t be thrown off by that.
- We know that auditioning is very nerve-wracking and we want you to show us your best, so please know we’re there to support you!
TIPS ON PREPARATION:
- Auditions are competitive and roles are limited. Knowledge of the music and the show is required. Show us what role you deserve. It's always obvious to us who is prepared and who is not.
- You will perform a lot better if you are memorized. Always bring your sides with you just in case, but if you never have to look at them, it will make a stronger impression. Being off-book frees up your hands to express yourself, and frees up your face and eyes so we can connect to you emotionally.
- Work on projecting loudly and articulating clearly.
- We are looking to see you act a character through song and dance, as well as your musical proficiency and competency. We want to see that you can use your body, your hands and your facial expressions at the same time as you sing.
- It's important that you make bold, exciting choices.
- Be familiar with the style of the show and make clear choices.
- Please do not merely imitate other actor's performances.
- Don’t try to imitate a child or act in a childish manner.
