In a city plagued by greed and selfishness, the gods descend in search of one truly good person—and find her in Shen Teh, a poor but kind-hearted prostitute who offers them shelter when no one else will. As a reward, they give her the means to start a new life, hoping she can remain good despite the harshness of the world. But kindness comes at a cost. To survive, Shen Teh invents a ruthless alter ego, Shui Ta, who takes control when her compassion threatens to ruin her. As her dual life spirals out of control, Shen Teh must confront the impossible choice between doing good and staying alive. The Good Person of Setzuan is a bold and haunting parable that challenges us to imagine what it means to be good in a world that punishes goodness.
