Recreating Reading Through Pictures

Materials needed:

Several sheets of chart paper and markers

Learning challenge addressed/predictable outcome:

Students will be engaged in class discussions on the readings.

Best used for:

  • Material that will be read for class and discussed in class
  • Classes with 30 students or less (can be modified for larger classes)

Learning objectives/skills fostered:

Students will represent what they have read using pictures/drawings. Students will engage in discussions as they draw in small groups and later in conversations with the whole class.

What to do/how to do it:

Assign a chapter or an article for homework. When students come to class, divide them into small groups (of 4 or so). Each group is responsible for one section of the chapter, but the students do not know what section of the chapter the other groups have. Each group represents their section in picture form (no words allowed) on the chart paper. When the groups are finished, each group brings up their chart paper (one group at a time) and the other students are to explain what they see and connect it to the readings. This allows the students to discuss the readings with each other.

Tips for implementing:

Explain to the students that the quality of the art is not the focus, rather it is representing the reading by drawing images to later help facilitate a discussion.
