This resource provides guidance and information that will help you decide how to communicate academic expectations, especially about maintaining academic integrity in the age of artificial intelligence. While it may seem that the definition of academic honesty might be straightforward, establishing what counts as academic dishonesty is not as simple.
Since the rules for what counts as academic dishonesty may vary from class to class, this can lead to increased confusion and stress. Thus, academic integrity is also a concern for students. They might need help understanding the typical conventions of credibility, integrity, and the expected style guide for your academic field. Additionally, instructors have unique teaching philosophies and pedagogical strategies, including whether or not an instructor might encourage student collaboration or use artificial intelligence as a pedagogical tool. Setting the tone early on and throughout the course becomes crucial in establishing clear policies that not only define academic honesty but also model and integrate opportunities to practice academic integrity for an equitable learning experience.
So how can faculty cultivate and promote academic honesty and respond effectively to instances of suspected dishonesty?
