JOUR 498 SENIOR PROJECT - (10064-SP2023)
This course involves students in the creation of written, photographic and multimedia content for local non-profit organizations in communities adjacent to the CSUN campus. In Spring 2023 we will be working with the Tatavium Nation Tribe Links to an external site. in San Fernandoto create archival records, oral histories, photographic documentation of historic sites, and to help fill their general media needs. This will be a CSUN Service Learning Course, funded through a grant from the Office of Community Engagement. Depending on the students’ own skill set (broadcast, print, photography, public relations) each participant will create content to meet the objectives of our class.

JOUR 410 INVEST REPORTING - (10691-SP2023)
In this course you will learn the approach, mindset, tools and skills used by investigative reporters. You will learn a fundamental approach to journalism that takes you beyond day-to-day, event focused reporting, adding context and meaning to your stories. You will work on improving your credibility and accuracy by using documents and data, and interviewing more effectively. This course is intended to be practical, while at the same time causing you to think deeply about the stories you do and why you do them. This includes dealing with the ethical questions investigative journalists face. By the semester’s end, students will be able to integrate multiple sources to produce a well-written and constructed investigative text and multimedia project, producing investigative stories worthy of publication in student and professional media outlets.

JOUR 460 MAG JOURNALISM - (10652-SP2023)
Journalism 460 is a class that results in the production and distribution of Scene, a non-fiction general interest magazine published by the Journalism Department. The magazine will be published in both print and on-line versions, and is targeted toward the CSUN community. Students will work in teams with the goal of producing a magazine featuring a series of illustrated investigative and feature reports. The magazine will focus on a theme determined by the students.

JOUR 250 VISUAL COMM - (11429-SP2023)
Visual Communication is interwoven with Visual Literacy, defined as the ability to find meaning in imagery, and Visual Culture, which focuses on aspects of culture that rely on visual images. Both are indispensible components of contemporary life, essential to a wide range of disciplines, sciences and enterprises including anthropology, sociology, psychology and engineering, as well as governmental and commercial interests.
